Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE) is the first meaningful use objective of the 25 stage 1 requirements. To meet CPOE, an EMR must ”enable a user [eligible professional] to electronically record, store, retrieve, and manage, at a minimum the following order types: 1. Medications; 2. Laboratory; 3. Radiology/imaging; and 4. Provider referrals.” EMR vendors should have little trouble meeting this fairly standard computer capability. Stage 2, however, due in 2013, will likely require this data to be analyzed for patient outcome and safety purposes.
